New NC 811 “Call Before You Dig” Laws to Take Effect October 1

Fiber deployment is skyrocketing in North Carolina, and Governor Pat McCrory is taking note. Having met with both Google and AT&T in talks to deploy more fiber in NC, McCrory is now pushing to align all NC utilities with the national “811 – Call before you dig” laws. The new laws go into effect October 1, 2014, and touch on everything from tolerance zones and pre-marking to emergency and damage notifications. S&N was involved in early discussions with NC 811 executive director Louis Panzer and marketing manager Doc Asbury to encourage partnerships with both Google and AT&T. “We’re thrilled with how NC 811 grabbed hold of this opportunity and ran with it,” says S&N President Allen Powell. “An increase in fiber connectivity for NC means more companies will consider NC as a viable business location. Partnerships like these translate to more jobs coming to the state.” Powell notes the participation of all utilities will also ensure less property damage and greater personal safety for crews and civilians.
